Alumni Story Overcoming Imposter Syndrom to Pursue a Cyber Career FSA

Although he enrolled with limited tech experience and skills, Fullstack Academy Cybersecurity Bootcamp graduate Kelly Johnson is now confident in his job readiness. Reflecting on his learning journey, he states:

“I was told [the bootcamp] would be intense, fast-paced, and transformative—and that turned out to be 100% true. The pace is challenging, but the environment is super supportive. What makes it manageable (and exciting) is that the simulations and team projects are modeled after real-world work conditions, so you’re not just learning theory. It really prepares you for what it’s like on the job.”

The cybersecurity bootcamp prepares students to thrive in industry roles. Through a project-based curriculum, students learn to protect and defend networks using real-world tools. Applying these tools practically is an important part of career readiness, which is why it’s integrated throughout the bootcamp curriculum.

“One of the most helpful parts of the bootcamp has been learning how to use key cybersecurity tools — not just individually, but together in real-world scenarios,” recalls Kelly.

“Gaining hands-on experience with Wireshark, Snort, and Autopsy has really boosted my confidence and made me feel much more prepared to step into a role in the industry. On top of that, diving deeper into Python scripting and more advanced Linux skills has been a game-changer. The bootcamp showed me how to think like an analyst and apply [cybersecurity] tools in practical, meaningful ways.”

Understanding and applying industry-standard cyber tools at an accelerated pace is a challenge. Additionally, students may be struggling with imposter syndrome: the fear that they’re unfit for a role despite possessing strong qualifications for it.

Facing these challenges alone could be daunting, but Kelly—in keeping with other Fullstack Academy reviews—indicates that cybersecurity bootcamp students benefit from a supportive community:

“One of the most challenging aspects has been managing imposter syndrome while keeping up with the fast pace of the program. But, honestly, the support has made all the difference. I've had a lot of help from fellow students and my instructor.”

Fullstack Academy bootcamps also feature career success support. Professional career coaches offer guidance to students for up to a year following graduation, helping to identify opportunities, prepare for interviews, and optimize resumes:

“Where I’ve felt the most support is from Career Services. They’re in my corner, always rooting for me to land that job. They truly believe in our skills and remind us that, while imposter syndrome is real, we’re capable and ready—we just need that one opportunity to prove it.”

Overall, Kelly’s dedication to the curriculum, plus invaluable support from instructional staff, fellow students, and career coaches, resulted in his graduation from the program.

His advice to current and prospective tech bootcamp students?

“Be prepared to learn and be ready to put in the work outside of lectures. The workshops are essential, and spending time going through them afterward really helps solidify what you’ve learned.”

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the prospect of accelerated tech training, you’re not alone. Many students worry about their abilities in preparing for a career in cybersecurity. However, with support throughout the program and personal dedication to professional development, Kelly Johnson is proof that it is possible.
