From Machines to Music to Code: How Jake Transitioned Into Software Engineering

How Jake Transitioned Into Software Engineering

Jake McGuire's path into software engineering wasn't a traditional one. After earning a degree in mechanical engineering, he spent nearly a decade working in the music industry as an audio engineer. But as he began thinking about what came next, he realized that the common thread throughout his career had always been a passion for engineering and problem-solving.

Engineering in general is really just my passion. The medium seems to matter a little bit less.

That realization led Jake to enroll in Fullstack Academy's Software Engineering Bootcamp. While learning new technical skills, he also connected with fellow students Tyler Woyshner and Ken Langsdorf, relationships that would continue long after graduation.

Through that, I was able to meet Tyler and Ken.

Together, the three graduates went on to co-found BlockCode, an interactive platform designed to help aspiring developers learn coding interview concepts in a more visual and approachable way.

As Jake continued building software after graduation, he discovered that growth often comes from taking on unfamiliar challenges and learning through experience.

Just build things. Don't build them to be perfect.

Today, Jake continues to develop software while helping grow BlockCode, applying lessons learned throughout his career journey—from mechanical engineering to audio engineering to software development.

    Embrace the unknown.

Watch the video below to hear Jake discuss his career transition, his experience in the bootcamp, and the journey that led to co-founding BlockCode.
